Budgets and thresholds

Scope, period, three thresholds with actions, never-touch list, rollover.

Anatomy of a budget

  • Scope: a provider, one project, or a single key. Spend is aggregated without double counting.
  • Period: daily or monthly, in the organisation timezone; the period rolls over automatically and writes a budget.period_rollover event.
  • Thresholds: warn / alert / act (default 50 / 80 / 100%), each with an action: notify, sever or pause.
  • Never-touch list: keys this budget must never sever or pause, even with dry-run off. Skips are logged.
  • Projection: linear end-of-period estimate; the AI insight service adds a burn-rate forecast.

Evaluation

The worker evaluates every active budget every 5 minutes, idempotently: each threshold fires once per period, and every decision is written to the events table.
